A slump in Chinese malting barley imports, besides improved crop
conditions in major producing countries, could lead to a fall in prices.
Chinese imports of barley, which are essentially all for use by
maltsters rather than as livestock feed, dropped by nearly 50% to
566,000 tonnes in the first four months of 2013. China is the top
importer and purchases nearly half of its consumption of some 4 million
(m) tonnes a year. The global Barley production is forecast to climb to
137.7 million tons from 129.7 million tons in 2013-14 following bigger
crops in Russia, Ukraine, Turkey and Morocco, according to the
International Grains Council.
